VOTE 2016

This page is updated for upcoming elections...

...and obviously most specifically for my neck of the woods.
Still the guides & info will be especially helpful for CA voters in general.
Comment at the bottom of this page if you would like me to address a specific candidate.
I'd be happy to research it and report on it here.

If you aren't registered to vote or if you aren't sure if you are registered, go to this link and register.
Be informed and vote well.  If you don't know about a particular issue or candidate, then please abstain from that particular race. Vote only for those things you have researched and know.

A fun gift from my Patriot neighbors!

I also urge you - if you are an absentee voter - to wait as long as possible to fill out your ballot.  So much information is discovered up until election day and you may change your mind.  I do all the time.  You can always walk in your absentee ballot, if necessary.  Or surrender it and vote at the polls.

"Now more than ever before, the people are responsible for the character of their Congress.  If that body be ignorant, reckless, and corrupt, it is because the people tolerate ignorance, recklessness, and corruption.  If it be intelligent, brave, and pure, it is because the people demand these high qualities to represent them in the legislature." ~President James Garfield

Here is each candidate's plan on how to fight ISIS.

Now, before you complain about the presidential options, please consider this commentary by Rick Green from Constitution Alive!:
"...instead of just showing up in November and complaining about the options...  It's easy to show up to the party and look at all the desserts on the table and say, 'Well, I don't like any of these.  Where's my gooey, chewy chocolate chip?' or whatever.  We complain about what's there. ---  It takes a little work to show up a little early and get in the kitchen.  We need to show up a little early and get in the kitchen and be a part of mixing up the ingredients that will provide for the options when everybody else shows up. --- That's what I'm asking you to do.  Get inside the mixing bowl of our process that [the Framers of the Constitution] created.  Don't just show up in November; get involved long before that. --- The options are going to be better if we're involved in the primaries...  If you do that, you'll get a better choice in November. --- I'm asking you to give up your lives (your time), your fortunes (supporting good causes and good candidates), and your sacred honor (the willingness to speak the truth and not be afraid and let the chips fall where they may)."

HILLARY CLINTON (D)

Her 30,000 deleted emails.
Wikileaks/John Podesta

Wants SCOTUS judges who will uphold "marriage equality" & Roe v. Wade. (per 10/19/16 debate)
Endorsed by Equality California, Planned Parenthood.

-- VP, TIM KAINE

DONALD TRUMP (R)
My recommendation, as challenging as this is.
(That infamous Twitter account.)
Claims he is pro-life.  Used to be pro-choice, but changed his stance in the 90'sWould like exceptions for rape, incest, life of the mother.  Says he would vote to defund Planned Parenthood, but says that PP does a lot of good and "helps millions of women" with breast cancer.  Fact: PP has never conducted a single mammogram, ever.
Says he will nominate Pro-life SCOTUS judges.  His list of potential nominees here.
Of note: this list of nominees is an excellent one which was influenced heavily by Rick Santorum and centered on being pro-life.  Most if not all would repeal Roe v. Wade.  NARAL (pro-Abortion group ) freaked out over this list.
Build up the military. Take care of veterans. (9/16/15 GOP Debate)
Illegal immigration: Deport "criminal" illegal aliens (If someone is in the U.S. illegally they are already criminal. ~Kori).  Build a wall along the southern border "and make Mexico pay for it."  The 14th amendment is not about birthright citizenship for illegals and tourists. Defund sanctuary cities.
Pro-Israel.
Defend the 2nd Amendment.  Opposes gun & magazine bans.
Will consider a minimum wage hike.
Believes vaccines cause autism. In favor of vaccines, but smaller doses over a longer period of time. (9/16/15 GOP Debate)
Some worry that Trump has fascist tendencies.  From the 3/3/16 GOP debate regarding commanding the military to carry out Presidential orders that violate U.S. law: "I'm a leader... If I say do it, they're going to do it."
Opposes CCSS. Wants local control of educationAdvocates for school choice, including homeschooling.
Opposes Obamacare.
Says he will fight against the Muslim persecution of Christians. (Mentioned in a debate.)
Supports transgenders using bathrooms of their choice.  He believes passing laws about bathrooms is unnecessary bc it has been a non-issue.  Leave it to local communities and states.  Believes that creating separate bathrooms for transgenders is discriminatory. Video here
Plans "forward motion" for LGBT-ers.
Has great respect for Police officers.
Childcare perks for single moms.  It's an entitlement and expansion of government.

Notable endorsements: Sarah Palin, AZ Gov Jan Brewer, Sheriff Joe Arpaio, Gov Chris Christie, Rep Duncan Hunter, Dr. Ben Carson, Mike TysonNRA, Troy Newman, Alveda King (niece of Martin Luther King, Jr.)

Vulgar, impulsive, and arrogant.  Calls Ted Cruz "Lyin' Ted", alleged that Cruz's father was involved in the JFK assassination.  Denigrates women's looks (here and here).  Said Ben Carson has a pathological temper that "there's no cure for." And of course the great Billy Bush exchange.
#NeverTrump -ers (people that refuse to support Trump): Dr. Everett Piper (not sure this is still accurate), Mike Farris, Rep Mia Love.

-- VP, MIKE PENCE

GARY JOHNSON (L)

U.S. SENATE
With Barbara Boxer not running for reelection, this Senate seat is open.

KAMALA HARRIS (D) - current California Attorney General.
When Planned Parenthood was exposed for harvesting and selling aborted babies' body parts by undercover journalists, Harris refused to investigate Planned Parenthood and has instead targeted David Daleiden, raiding his home and confiscating his personal property.  Harris has a fawning loyalty to Planned Parenthood, sponsoring a bill (AB 775) (alongside PP) last year that forces Pregnancy Care Centers to advertise for abortion (legal action still pending).  Says she protects "voiceless and vulnerable" people, except unborn babies being dismembered and sold off by their parts, and I'm not sure I'd call PP "voiceless and vulnerable." (60:00)
Opposed Hobby Lobby's position to not be forced to provide abortifacients through ACA.
Pro-choice.
Supports same-sex marriageWants transgenders to be a protected classPrides herself for leading the opposition to Prop 8. Defend same-sex marriage. (76:20)

Advocates for climate change legislation.
Supported Obama's Iran Nuclear deal.
Believes America should have the world's strongest military.
Wants free collegeIncrease Pell Grants - taxpayer funded.
Supports raising the minimum wage (17:20), paid family & sick leave...
Gets a 7% NRA rating.  "I have taken more guns out of the hands of people who don't legally deserve to have them.... I'm proud of that." Wants more agents in her CA Dept of Justice so she can confiscate more guns. (Will she use these add'l agents to harass David Daleiden and the Center for Medical Progress?) Renew Feinstein's assault weapons ban. (66:45)
"no anti-Muslim rhetoric." (31:30)

Opposes defunding PP.
Honored: Tish Leon, "actively involved" in Orange County's National Organization for WomenCarina Franck-Patone, board member of the Community Action Fund for Planned Parenthood; Claudia Perez-Figueroa, Public Affairs Advocacy Manger for PP. (Every year, Rep Sanchez honors twelve women.  These are among the twelve for 2016.)

Conceited and annoying.  Just watch her for 10 seconds on this debate.

CA:

Prop 51 - Public School Funding
(FB, also here)
Supporters: Lt. Gov Newsom, Harvey Milk LGBT Democratic Club, Mike Slater
Opponents: Gov Jerry Brown, Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association (HJTA)

I recommend a NO vote.

Prop 52
 (Constitutional amendment)

Supporters: Sen Joel Anderson, Sen Toni Atkins, Asm Shannon Grove, Asm Brian Jones, Rep Melissa Melendez, Rep Marie Waldron, Harvey Milk LGBT Democratic Party, California Teachers Assoc, Planned Parenthood Affiliates of CA, HJTA, Mike Slater

I recommend a NO vote.

Prop 53 - Requires voter approval on state borrowing of $2 billion or more (in revenue bonds which currently require no voter approval) (Constitutional amendment)
From Ballotpedia: "The proposed tunnels to move water through the Sacramento to San Joaquin River Delts and California High-Speed Rail are two projects that would require voter approval should Proposition 53 pass."
Supporters: Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Assoc. (HJTA),  Mike Slater
Opposition: Gov Jerry Brown (I imagine so since it affects his choo-choo train.), Harvey Milk LGBT Dem Club, SEIU

I recommend a YES vote.  No more blank checks for CA politicians.

Prop 54 - Requires Bills be posted online 72 hours before a vote

Support: HJTA, Charles Munger, Jr., Mike Slater
Opposition: California Democratic Party, HJTA

I recommend a YES vote.

Prop 55 - Extends the 2012 (Prop 30) income tax increase for incomes over $250,000

They don't call it Taxifornia for nothing.  The money is supposed to go to public schools/colleges.  Prop 30 was a temporary tax hike.  Leave it to CA to try to make it permanent.
Supported by: California Teachers Association, Lt Gov Gavin Newsom, Sen Ricardo Lara, State Superintendent Tom Torlakson, Rep Toni Atkins, Harvey Milk LGBT Democratic Club, Planned Parenthood Affiliates of CA, SEIU
Opposed by: Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Assoc., Mike Slater

I recommend a NO vote.

Prop 56 - Adds a tax to tobacco products and e-cigarette products

Support: Sen Ricardo Lara, Sen Mark Leno, Harvey Milk LGBT Dem Club, Equality CA, Sierra Club, SEIU
Opposed by: Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Assoc, Phillip-Morris USA, R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., Mike Slater

I recommend a NO vote.  Stop taxing us already. Even if you personally hate smoking, it isn't our job to force others to conform.  That's tyranny.

Prop 57 - Increases parole chances for non-violent & juvenile criminals

Concerning crimes including rape and sex trafficking (on p.2 of initiative language) fall under "non-violent."
Support: Gov Jerry Brown, Lt Gov Gavin Newsom, Newt Gingrich, Harvey Milk LGBT Dem Club, SEIU, HJTA
Opponents: Rep Loretta Sanchez, Asm Shannon Grove, Asm Brian Jones, Asm Melissa Melendez, Asm Marie Waldron, Mike Slater

I recommend a NO vote.  Though I support criminal justice reform, this is poorly attempted and they need to go back to the drawing board.  Rape and trafficking should not be discounted ever.

Prop 58 - Reinstates dual language/bi-lingual education. Repeals the English only immersion program.

Supporters: Sen Ricardo Lara, Jerry Brown, Gavin Newson, Harvey Milk LGBT Dem Club, Sierra Club, California Teachers Assoc, SEIU
Opposition: Mike Slater

I recommend a NO vote.

Prop 59 - Allow Legislators to overturn Citizens United which allows corporations and unions unlimited donations regarding elections

Supporters: Bernie Sanders, California Teachers Association, Sen Mark Leno
Opponents: Sen Mike Morrell, Sen Ted Gaines, Asm Brian Jones, Asm Shannon Grove, Asm Melissa Melendez, Asm Marie Waldron, Mike Slater

I recommend a NO vote.  People and businesses/organizations should be free to do whatever they want as long as they are not violating the law.

Prop 60 - Force porn stars to use condoms when they are filming the performance of oh-my-gosh-I-can't-believe-this-is-on-the-ballot

Support: AIDS Healthcare Foundation, HJTA
Opposition: Sen Mark Leno, Harvey Milk LGBT Dem Club, Equality CA, Dan Savage

I recommend a NO vote.  Have we lost our minds? The answer is yes.  This is not the role of government.

Prop 61 - Drug prices paid by CalPERS & Medi-Cal match the same price that the V.A. pays

Support: Bernie Sanders, Rep Mike Honda, AIDS Healthcare Foundation, Al Sharpton,
Opposition: Harvey Milk LGBT Dem Club, numerous pharmaceutical companies, HJTA, Mike Slater

I recommend a NO vote.

Prop 62 - Abolishes the death penalty

Some are arguing a YES vote on this initiative since death row criminals are hardly ever executed and a ton of money is spent in appeals.  Basically, the argument is that giving up the fight for the death penalty will save the state a load of money on persistent and unavoidable appeals.
Prop 66 (below) would provide death penalty reforms that will address the issue of the exhorbitant costs of appeals. So, if you vote NO on 62, you should vote YES on 66.
Support:
Opposition: HJTA

I recommend a NO vote.  Justice for victims.  Though I understand that California may simply never provide that justice.

Prop 63 - Background Checks for Ammo Purchases

Violates the 2nd Amendment. "Shall not be infringed" ought to mean something.
Opposition arguments here.
Opposition: Mike Slater

I recommend a NO vote.

Prop 64 - Legalize Marijuana for people over the age of 21

Would allow ads "promoting marijuana smoking, gummy candies, and brownies on shows watched by millions of children and teens."
Creates a whole new CA bureaucracy to regulate marijuana in the state.
Support: George Soros is a major funder in support of this initiative.; Gavin Newsom, Rep Barbar Lee, Rep Tom McCLintock, Rep Dana Rohrabacher, Asm Toni Atkins, Gov Gary Johnson (LIbertarian Presidential candidate), Harvey Milk LGBT Dem Club, ACLU, Equality CA,
Opposition: California Association of Highway Patrolmen, Dianne Feinstein, Sen Joel Anderson, Sen Jim Nielsen, Asm Melissa Melendez, Supervisor Bill Horn,

I recommend a NO vote.

Prop 65 - Mandates that the money collected by stores from bag sales (to carry out their products) be dedicated to Wildlife Conservation Fund Initiative

Do you want grocery stores or an environmental fund to receive the 10 cents per bag that you will pay if plastic bags are banned from stores?
Mike SlaterCRA support this measure, though they hope it will be a non-issue if Prop 67 fails.  All other conservative guides (that I have found) oppose.

Prop 66 - Shortens the opportunity to challenge a death penalty sentence to a max of 5 years.

Support: Various law enforcement unions, Sen Jeff Stone, Sen Ed Royce, D.A. Bonnie Dumanis, HJTA
Opposition: Gavin Newson, Sen Barbara Boxer, Harvey Milk LGBT Dem Club, ACLU, SEIU

I recommend a YES vote.

Prop 67- Bans stores from issuing plastic bags
Support: Jerry Brown, Gavin Newsom, Sen Ricardo Lara, Rep Toni Atkins, Harvey Milk LGBT Dem Club, Sierra Club
Opposition: Rep Tom McClintock, Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Assoc.

I recommend a NO vote.

MEASURE A - adds a half-cent sales tax to pay for road repairs.
Opposition: HJTA,  Mike Slater

I'm voting NO because we pay plenty in taxes.  They should be as efficient as humanly possible with our money.

MEASURE B
Support: HJTA
